The Yurta Quality Standard

Made with superior materials and Canadian craftsmanship since 2004.

A quarter century of studying and designing has taught us that yurts are only as good as the materials and people that make them.

Premium Materials

Every Yurta uses materials that are natural or non-toxic. Where we use synthetic materials, we make no compromises for toxicity or performance.

Every species of wood is chosen for its purpose and use in the humid North American climate. The hardwood white ash for structural integrity and Furniture-grade cedar for the exterior door.

We choose the very best and continually refine our manufacturing to offer what we believe is the very best design, made with the very best materials, by the very best human hands in our industry today.

Material Promise

Every piece of wood is hand-selected. No substitutions and no compromises. Quality always rules.

Breathable Fabrics

Most yurts are sealed in toxic vinyl. We believe a shelter must breathe. We have chosen to completely avoid standard fabrics like vinyl, PVC, and bubble-wrap insulation in our yurts. First and foremost, vinyl is a toxic material. It off-gasses noticeably. The smell is familiar and unhealthy.

Second, their impermeability create a perfect environment for a host of problems. These materials are used by other yurts because they’re inexpensive. But their lack of breathability is the reason why many yurts develop mold hidden behind the bubble-wrap.

Without mechanical means to manage moisture, breathable fabrics are a MUST for yurts. Our team of expert canvas workers make a weather-tight cover for Yurta with fabrics that allow the yurt to breathe out moisture and prevent the long-term accumulation of condensation and mold.

Canadian Yurt Craft

MADE IN CANADA

We are proud that every part of our yurt is sourced locally and meets our exacting standards for quality and craftsmanship. Every piece of wood is shaped, and every piece of fabric is sewn in our local maker network in Ontario.

We have worked with most of this same network of skilled makers and tradespeople since 2004.

When you buy a Yurta, every dollar stays in Canada. You’re supporting an entire ecosystem of small Canadian businesses who believe in quality and sustainability as an effort in minimalism.

Made exclusively for us, our insulation combines:

Thermal Insulation

The thermal resistance of the wool helps keep the air inside the yurt from equalizing with outdoor temps.

Radiant Barrier

The built-in reflective layer bounces radiant heat back toward its source, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter.

Wool naturally absorbs and releases large amounts of moisture. It regulate humidity and prevents condensation buildup inside your yurt.

Temperature Regulation

Cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather. Wool provides comfort year-round.

Beautiful and Cozy

The ultimate in natural materials, our wool felt is a luxurious finish for your yurt. It’s like being hugged by a building that’s wearing a wool sweater.

This combined radiant and thermal capability makes our wool felt the ultimate lightweight insulation that is breathable, natural and non-toxic. It suitable for cold winter climates when the temperature drops to -30°C or colder.

The Love

Made with care in every touch

Making the yurt the way we do requires human hands at every step. It’s a labour of love.

Machines demand compromises we do not make.

The covers and woodwork we do in our own shop are done from scratch to exacting standards. This human touch allows us to use our brains and hands to work beyond the normal limits of machines. There are 70’ seams on the yurt that require total care, teamwork and devotion to make.

We know there’s a select group of people who’ll be moved by the work that goes into a Yurta. We’re grateful for every single one of you.

The secret ingredient is the love.
You’ll feel it when you stand in yours.
