6 ft or 7 ft Walls
Our 7 ft walls are the more popular pick. If easier setup, heating and upkeep matter more to you, the 6 ft walls may be the better fit.
Both versions have the same 226 sq ft floor. The 7 ft walls add headroom near the walls and more interior volume. Which one suits you is a personal call, so here’s what we tell people who ask.

Yurta 17.6 With 6 ft Walls
- Six feet is the wall height, not the ceiling. The roof rises to 10 ft at the centre, so you have standing room across the floor. It’s deceptively roomy.
- The door opening is lower. We don’t cut our roof valance to fit a taller door in order to protect the integrity of the cover. You’ll duck on the way out, and a little on the way in. That’s the main reason buyers pass on the 6 ft model.
- It’s slightly easier to put up, heat and maintain. If you’ll move your portable yurt a lot or heat it all winter, that reduced footprint can matter.
Yurta 17.7 With 7 ft Walls
- A near-standard door height. No ducking.
- More interior volume, with room for an off-the-shelf bunk bed with no modifications.
- The trade-offs are more air to heat, a step or two higher to reach the parts you maintain, and a bit more added weight.
Yurta 17 or Yurta 21?
The Yurta 21 gives a bigger group more room. The Yurta 17 is the far lighter yurt of the two, quicker to set up and easier to move. Here’s how they compare.
| Feature | Yurta 17 | Yurta 21 |
|---|---|---|
| Price (CAD) | $14,500 or $16,000 | $22,000 |
| Floor area | 226 sq ft | 346 sq ft |
| Wall height | 6 or 7 ft | 7 ft |
| Standard windows | 3, up to 7 in total | 4, up to 9 in total |
| Sleeps | 2 to 4 | 4 or more |
| Setup with two people | About 2 hours | 4 to 6 hours |
| Weight | 490 lbs About a third of a Yurta 21 | 1,100 lbs About three times a Yurta 17 |
Pick the Yurta 21 if you host bigger groups or want more room to spread out. Though it shares the same tent-first design of Yurta 17, it is more of a semi-permanent structure. Its availability is strictly limited, so ask early. See the Yurta 21.
Who the Yurta 17 Is For
Buyers put this portable yurt to work in four main ways.
A Guest Cabin at the Cottage
Your cottage sleeps six and the long weekend brings ten. A Yurta 17 gives your guests a room of their own, with a solid cedar door, windows nearly 4 ft square and a dome to open on warm nights. The white ash frame and breathable cover make it a bunkie your guests will want to spend time in. And if you ever sell the cottage, this portable yurt comes with you.
A Backyard Yurt Studio or Home Office
Need a room that isn’t the kitchen table? A backyard yurt puts a quiet workspace a few steps from your back door. Daylight comes in through three windows and the dome. At five o’clock you close the door and walk back to the house. It works just as well as a yurt studio for painting, writing or anything else that needs quiet, creative, or collaborative work.
Yurta is an exceptionally bright space even on the greyest days. For that reason, Yurta is not a suitable dark room as-installed.
A Cabin in the Woods, or on Shared Land
The Yurta 17 is freestanding. That suits a cabin in the woods, and it suits people with access to land they don’t own. If plans change, the portable yurt comes down and leaves with you in a few hours.
A Couples’ Retreat or Your First Glamping Site
Two people, a good bed and the dome open to the night sky. That’s the Yurta 17 at its simplest. Starting a glamping business? It’s a sensible first unit. Learn what your guests love before you buy more.
“Yurta has become my favourite space on earth.”
Lori McCarthy, Yurta owner
Why the Yurta 17 Is a 4-Season Yurt
Every Yurta 17 is a 4-season yurt. The frame is load-bearing on its own, with or without insulation, and it’s tested to carry a load and endure 100+ km/h winds.
A Cover That Breathes
Roof and walls are acrylic-coated polyester, and the entire shell is breathable, so moisture always has an opportunity to dry out. There’s no vinyl anywhere in a Yurta. Storm anchors and a metal rain diverter come standard, and the windows have clear Lexan inserts for cold weather. Open the dome to vent the yurt from multiple angles and increments.
The Wool Felt Insulation Package
The insulation package lines your Yurta 17 with 100% wool felt with a radiant backing, made exclusively for us, and it includes a snow kit. No one else offers it.
Insulation is about comfort, not strength. The structure handles winter on its own, and the wool felt keeps the heat in. With the insulation and a heat source, +20°C can be maintained inside, even when the outside temps drop to −20°C. Used by our clients in the Arctic, its radiant layer is also beneficial in warmer climates because it reflects some of the radiant heat out of the yurt. The thermal capacity of felted sheep’s wool adds a small envelope that aids in natural convection and heat-exhaust.
Planning on a stove? Consider our chimney outlet. There is more on insulation and floors on our Features and Options page.
Setting Up Your Yurta 17
The frame of the Yurta 17 comes fully assembled from our shop and opens like an umbrella. Two people join the ring, the frame and the door in about 15 minutes, without turning a screw or hammering a nail. Full setup takes two people about 2 hours. Our own crew does it in about an hour.
It’s designed to be easy to set up, maintain and move by owners. No special tools. No complicated hardware.
What It Sits On
Yurta is flexible and light enough to stake directly to the ground.
For a true four-season setup, your yurt needs a round floor to create an effective seal and micro-climate. We can help walk through the nuances of the options below.
- Build the structural round floor from the plans included with every Yurta. This will yield a structural round floor that does not require a separate, level platform. The round structural floor IS the platform. This is the best approach to minimize resources. But it requires some basic construction know-how.
- Use an existing level deck about a foot wider than the yurt, or more. Add the Insulfloor, our portable insulated floor system makes for a turnkey, round floor. Or build a round floor to suit your needs on top of your deck.
- Build our Octopad deck kit, which sits right on the soil and levels on uneven ground (lumber not included). Then add our Insulfloor, or build your own round floor to suit your needs.
No heavy, permanent foundation required.
